Carnegie signaling the importance of community-engaged health care teaching and learning.

Obesity and diabetes, heart disease, access to health care, and health disparities ... to address these critical contemporary issues requires the aggressive collaborative efforts of partnerships made up of higher-education institutions, governmental entities, public and private organizations, and community-based groups. Roger Bernier, formerly of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, captures this essential approach in his presentation at the Institute of Medicine on June 24, 2010, saying, "A fundamental challenge in the 21st century is integrating science and democracy since science alone is not sufficient to make public decisions." He notes, however, that "We lack a culture of shared decision making and collaborative problem solving between experts and the public-at-large." Although not focused on health collaboration specifically, the Community Engagement Classification of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching promises significant national impact in this area. The classification extends beyond health care to tap into other disciplines, all of which have potential to address related contemporary challenges.
