The answer at the conference that day came from an attendee, who remarked that she had just moved from one work setting to a job position in the other and that they "speak two completely different languages." Here, we arrive at a fundamental underlying challenge of many collaborative efforts—language. Two groups can be saying the same thing in different ways, or they can be saying different things in the same way, or they can be interested in 2 completely different aspects of a thing or, most basically, in different things altogether. Take community health improvement planning efforts around a topic such as diabetes, which might make a hospital partner think about glycemic control and an LHD representative think about obesity prevention.
