The Resnick et al article and abstract end with the exhortation "We cannot afford to miss this opportunity to reshape and strengthen the EPH workforce and assure our continued leadership in protecting the environment and the public's health." This language is consistent in sentiment with points frequently raised 20 or more years ago by colleague Larry Gordon, a long-time leader in public health practice, and advocate for strengthening the environmental public health infrastructure. Similar perspectives inform the analysis of training needs conducted by this author and a colleague just over 10 years ago.1 Public health work in the United States (and elsewhere) in the late 19th century and early 20th century was very much an environmental effort: cleaner drinking water, safer disposal of sewage and other waste, draining of mosquito-breeding lowlands near cities, and safer housing. The gradual dominance of disease-specific medical interventions and the development of public health roles for a wide range of healthcare professions, including nursing, gradually moved environmental actions from center stage to being one of many interventions taking place. The environmental movement of mid-20th century was an additional disruption, reshaping what were already the "fuzzy edges" of public health into new agencies with wider-reaching powers to protect not only human life but all life and all ecological niches.
