ONE TOOL TO FIX IT ALL? Corona has been seen as the all-rounder of pre-treatment for a long time. Although this is still unchallenged, recently there are more and more applications that cannot be solved perfectly with this well-established technology. This is especially valid for materials whose properties deviate from form and composition of a web based plastics film. For decades, web like materials have been the primary target for the improvement of corona technology, in order to deliver best results for even thinner and more flexible films, since these materials represent the most important applications by far. However, there are materials that differ from the common coordinates in size and components and some of the niches that might not have been economically worth bothering with 30 years ago, have now grown to be profitable markets. Above all, non polymer film substrates, such as metal foils, polymer foams, and fibre based materials such as textiles and nonwovens that in some of their properties - e.g. to be treatable as web like film - are similar to film, but in other ways differ significantly, and therefore demand to reconsider suitable pre-treatment solutions.
