摘要

Type 1 diabetes is a disease in which autoreactive immune cells attack and destroy the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas rendering the subject dependent on exogenous insulin for survival. This statement, or one similar, is one that often starts off an article discussing type 1 diabetes (T1D). While it captures the scientific nature of the disease, it fails to capture the patient perspective of what the affliction truly means. As much as T1D is a disease of the beta cell, it is a disease of the soul. Patients, often children, are required to constantly 'be on' and frequently interact with their disease. This requires testing their blood sugar frequently, taking injections, monitoring their diet and much more. All these activities ultimately require adjusting their lives to accommodate the disease, and despite doing all of these for years, the disease remains unpredictable with frustrating glucose fluctuations. The stress that the disease brings affects not only the patient but also their family and loved ones. Any parent of a child with T1D lives in constant fear that a hypoglycemic episode may take their son or daughter in the middle of the night. It is for these reasons that the collective community of people affected by type 1 diabetes consists of extremely passionate individuals dedicated to the pursuit of eradicating the disease. The desire to alleviate the fears and health issues of affected individuals is what fuels our pursuit for a cure. It is why researchers volunteer for fundraisers and walks, why patients eagerly enroll for studies, and what unites us in our common cause. As we move forward, it is important to understand where we have come with T1D from the perspective of patients.
