THE POWER AND PENETRATION OF INDIVIDUALISM in psychology canhardly be overestimated (Cushman, 1990; Richardson, Fowers, & Guignon,1999). It pervades psychologists' notions of thinking, remembering, feeling, andeven understanding of interpersonal relationships. Indeed, several scholars con-sider social psychology to be so individualistic that it rarely merits the adjective"social" (e.g., Reber & Osbeck, 2005). Kenneth Gergen's Relational Being:Beyond Self and Community not only adds richly to this critique but goes muchfurther than most critics in outlining an in-depth, compelling alternative.
