Introduction Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) results from congenital or acquired conditions affecting structures from the inner-hair cells of the cochlea to retrocochlear nerve tissue. Cochlear implantation (CI) is the most definitive treatment for patients with bilateral severe-to-profound SNHL. The standard preoperative evaluation for CI candidates includes high-resolution computed tomography (CT) of the temporal bone (or TBCT), visualizing the outer and middle ear as well as the bony labyrinth of the inner ear (Purcell et al, 2003). A study from our institution evaluated the incidence of scala communis, the absence of the interscalar septum, in our TB collection (Makary et al., 2010). Radiologically, a scala communis is described as a Mondini malformation. The group reviewed histologi-cal slides and measured angles at the interscalar ridge between the apical and lower-middle turns (R3) as well as the ridge between the upper-middle and upper basal turns (R2). They found that a flattened ridge (a ridge with a wide angle) corresponded to a scala communis deformity.
