Dispensing errors occur frequently in community pharmacies, according to recent evidence. Two approaches to the prevention of dispensing errors are the use of automation and inspection enhancement tools (e.g., bar code verification). A recent review did not find any controlled studies with a measure of the effect of bar code technology on prescription dispensing errors.3 Since that review, a study of a highly automated mail service pharmacy that incorporates bar code checks reported a dispensing error rate of 0.075%.
