Chief residents are both representatives of authority to residents and representatives of residents to authority. As such, chief residents play a conflicting role, as they must protect the educational interests of residents but also keep in mind departmental financial and strategic pursuits. As a result, a chief resident often functions as a mediator between the resident body and department administration. Additionally, chief residents are responsible for resident call and rotation schedules as well as residents' vacation time. These responsibilities and the appropriate actions one must take are often learned on the job and from mistakes learned along the way during the year. In this article, we strive to provide a guide for a smooth radiology chief residency year built on experience at a large university-based program.
