Radiologists in Finland, as in the other Nordic countries, have always followed advances in radiology training abroad, particularly in the United States and central Europe. The training requirements are determined not by the radiology community but by committees from the ministries of education and health, which tend to be dominated by surgeons and internists. Nevertheless, training requirements in radiology steadily increased to a total of 5 years of radiology and 1 year of general practice in the 1980s, in response to the challenges of CT, ultrasound, interven-tional procedures, and the advent of MRI. Because radiology training in Finland is very much service oriented, with considerably less formal teaching than in US residency programs, this extra time was considered necessary.
