Over the past few years, much attention has been focused on 2 previously little known entities: quality improvement organizations (QIOs) and specialty hospitals.That publicity, most of it unwelcome, and the resultant controversies have threatened the survival of both: QIOs imperiled by federally mandated investigations and specialty hospitals via the threat of exclusion from Medicare funding.
