Studies of marijuana usage suggest significant associations between chronic exposure to THC and increased absolute power, relative power, and coherence of alpha over frontal cortex (alpha hyperfrontality) and slowing of anterior and posterior alpha activity. SPECT and PET have been used to study the effect of THC on cerebral blood flow (CBF) with many studies showing increased frontal CBF after marijuana smoking,; although some report decreased CBF-1 or variable findings.SPECT investigations of THC have utilized inhaled Xe which produces a low energy gamma ray and lower levels of resolutions We could find no THC studies using Tc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO), an agent with better image quality. This pilot study investigated the effect of long term daily THC consumption using Tc-HMPAO SPECT and quantitative EEG assessment of alpha frequency and hyperfrontality.
