The name Texas is a derivative of the Caddo Indian word "teyshas" which means "friends" or "allies." Our state motto is "Friendship," and bamboo was a 'friend' to early Texas. These native bamboos were essential in the lives of The First People for thousands of years before the first European settlement. The original canebrake ecology of Texas is now a threatened ecosystem and its current importance is best understood by examining its value in the past.
