摘要

Using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children-Revised, Whitbeck and colleagues (p. 890) documented prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders in indigenous adolescents on four reserves in the United States and Canada. Compared to general U.S. population rates from the National Comorbidity Survey, the rates of substance use disorder and conduct disorder in this indigenous population were two- to threefold higher, and rates of odier psychiatric disorders were at the high end of population prevalence estimates. Rates of substance use disorder and conduct disorder increased dramatically between 10 and 12 and 13 and 15 years, ultimately affecting more than 25% of indigenous children. As with other disadvantaged populations, few services exist to address this mounting mental health crisis. These results underscore die critical need for both culturally sensitive mental health services and policy changes to address mental heakh disparities in the indigenous population.
