The symptom of hypersensitivity to tactile and auditory stimuli in childhood has been widely recognized for decades by occupational and physical therapists. This sensory dys-regulation is part of a complex of symptoms and behaviors previously referred to as sensory integration dysfunction, a term coined by occupational therapist and neuroscientist A. Jean Ayres in 1964. Although for many children these symptoms are circumscribed and transient, for others these sensitivities are pervasive and impairing. Despite their common presentation in various forms of severity, to date, neither the clinical significance nor the etiology of this symptom constellation, or its importance to emotional and behavioral functioning, has been well studied or understood. In a bold departure from the standard nomenclature, mental health clinicians proposed a new diagnostic category in the early 1990s dubbed regulatory disorders.
