摘要

As a clinician who counsels young entertainers and performers, I am often asked what motivates parents to subject their children to high-pressure, appearance-driven "glitz" beauty pageants. A 1999 article published in the Journal introduced the notion of "achievement by proxy" (ABP). Benign ABP occurs when parents, coaches, or other adults experience pride and satisfaction through a child's achievements. Adults with benign ABP support and nurture a child's development and abilities yet understand the child's limitations and individuality. Pathogenic ABP distortion (ABPD) arises when adults are driven primarily by the social and/or financial gains earned by a child's accomplishments. ABPD is often associated with child athletes; however, I submit that some pageant parents exhibit a unique form of ABPD I call "princess by proxy" (PBP).
