摘要

t is an honor to be part of the 50th anniversary tribute to the Journal of the American Academy of - Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, which has played, and still does play, an integral part in my education as a physician and scientist. I am particularly pleased to have been invited to rummage through issues from 30 or more years ago to select a long-forgotten article. I chose, "Biological Research in Child Psychiatry," authored by Judith Rapoport and Deborah Ismond and published in November 1982.1 This article brilliantly presaged the enormous importance of pediatric psychopharmacology, "neuroradiological techniques," and genetic research for our field. Written at a time when these areas of research were in their infancy, this article also prefigured the next three decades of distinguished contributions by Rapoport and her colleagues in the Intramural Program at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The NIMH Intramural Program is a remarkable place where stable funding, a biomedical setting, and encouragement to take risks enabled Rapoport and her colleagues to pursue intensive longitudinal studies of healthy and ill children and adolescents, including studies of rare patient groups, utilizing observational and experimental approaches. Our Journal is fortunate to have been the venue for many of these reports.
