The 50th anniversary of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is a cause for celebration because its development mirrors that of the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. At the time of the Journal's inception, there were almost no systematic methods of assessment or empirically validated treatments, In addition to many other conditions, this was certainly true of adolescent suicidal behavior. Over time, the Journal framed important questions, provided comprehensive answers to these questions, and has pointed promising directions for the next generation of research.
