The same could be said of child psychiatrists: Time and space are essential considerations when approaching issues of development. Growth, by definition, means change in space over time. As child psychiatrists, we are interested in defining the norms of growth trajectories for the sexes at different ages. In the brain, it has been useful to learn when an increase in size means development or maturation, such as with myelination of the prefrontal cortex, and when a decrease in size signifies developmental progression, such as with cortical thinning. In a world of findings about polygenic risk factors, functional brain connectivity, microglia, and glutamate signaling, these questions of size might seem basic or straightforward. Yet the questions about growth are perennial, and the answers remain cojnplex and multiple.
