摘要

Letters of recommendation (LOR) for use in the US Electronic Residency Application Service often lack clarity and have demonstrated low reliability between interpreting faculty members. Although standardized LORs have been shown to be more reliable than narrative prose LORs, they have not been pursued in dermatology. After Institutional Review Board approval, we performed a survey of the Association of Professors of Dermatology (APD) in August 2013 to provide evidence-based advice regarding LORs for medical students seeking a dermatology residency. The APD was chosen because it consists primarily of academic dermatologists ultimately involved in resident education and selection. A total of 129 surveys were returned from 352 active members (37%). The average letter writer in our survey wrote just over 4 letters per application cycle.
