To the Editor: Geriatrics in the United States is in critical condition. A shortage of geriatricians is looming and is only predicted to get worse. Many people do not know what geriatricians are and how their services are different from those of other primary care physicians. According to a recent study, geriatrics may be considered to be an "unknown specialty" in the United States. There are claims that geriatric medicine in the United States is "terminally ill" and that we had better concentrate on teaching other physicians geriatric medicine principles while we still have geriatricians in this country.
