B.L. Turner separated from the widespread Croton dioicus, a new species characterized by more luxuriant stern growth with long internodes and narrower leaves occurring on well drained soils in the Big Bend region of trans-Pecos Texas. Turner's new taxon differs only in a few quantitative (not qualitative) characters, and in these characters it blends into C. dioicus. Turner's taxon is considered to he minor variant in a wide-ranging and variable species. Turner's original species description does not meet the requirements for being validly published because two holotypes were designated.
