Development of Gait Analysis System for Parkinson's Disease Patients in Circular Walking

In this paper, we have designed a gait analysis system for detecting circular walking parameters for Parkinson's disease patients. The analysis system integrates low-cost sensors and devices with processing software and is easily portable with bluetooth wireless communication. Sensors employed include a gyroscope and four force sensitive resistors (FSR), which are wearable sensors attached to a patient, and a fixed laser scanner as well. The gait analysis system can measure and analyze circular walking data so that gait parameters such as walking speed, step length, and cadence can be obtained. In addition, the system can differentiate between normal steps and unusual steps such as freezing of gait (FOG) and asymmetric gaits. Five normal people have been asked to walk the circular path three times to collect the testing data. Experimental tests reveal that coefficient of determination of walking time was 0.99 and that of step number was 1 by comparing the test data of the system with those analyzed with video images.
