Atomic force microscopy, friction force microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FUR) were used for evaluating the damage and surface characteristics of Asian hair keratin and functional groups after acid treatment. The destruction and surface roughness of the acid-damaged human hair were evaluated. The calculated friction mapping was used to compare the damaged surface topography with the corresponding surface structure. The results indicated that the damage to the hair surface exhibited differences based on the acidity of different pH treatment processes. Different pH treatment time resulted in different extents of hair cuticle damage. The results revealed high peaks associated with the enhanced -CH2 intensity (approximately 2831 cm(-1), 2931 cm(-1)) regions. Using FUR, it was possible to observe wave number changes in the surface topography and interfacial structure after hair damage.
