A Computational Framework for Model-Based Innovative Conceptual Design Process

Conceptual design is the most critical phase of engineering design. Current researches in the conceptual design have focused on three perspectives: collaboration, computational and innovation design environment, and have provided separately these characteristics. Integrating them into the conceptual design process is increasingly becoming a vital necessity for the next generation engineering design activities and CAD/E systems. To that end, in this paper, we propose a computational framework for an innovative conceptual design process by using SysML diagrams. We conceive that the computational framework proposed has three basic characteristics: computational and collaborative through SysML, and innovative through TRIZ and QFD. To illustrate the applicability of this framework in practice, a case study, which includes the conceptual design of a mechanical water filter for pretreatment prior to reverse osmosis process, is carried out. As a result, eleven SysML diagrams that can be reused are produced to represent the mechanical filter design.
