The metallurgical coke produced upon thermal synthesis of coal blends serves as a reducing agent (a fuel reductant) and a heat carrier and also serves to support the burden in the blast furnace. As the fuel, it supplies the heat as well as the gases required for the reduction of iron ore. The requirements for coke quality constantly increase in connection with the necessity of diminishing its consumption and of improving the technical and economic indices of operation of blast furnaces. The steady demand for high-quality metallurgical coke is accounted for by the shortage of coking coals, the resources of which do not exceed 20 percent of the total reserves. At the same time, the quality of coke depends mainly on the quality of the coal blend and the design features of coke-oven batteries and, to lesser extent, on the coking conditions. Therefore, in order to upgrade the quality of coke, much attention in byproduct coke plants is paid to the optimization of the quality and composition of the coal blend.The coal industry in Kazakhstan is traditionally highly developed, this being due to the powerful resources of coking and power-generating coals of Karaganda and Ekibastuz coalfields. The Karaganda metallurgical plant has used, over 35 years, a coal blend composed of 88-90 percent of Karaganda coals of grades KZh and K and 12-10 percent of Kuznetsk gas coals. With the breakup of economical relations, the Ispat-Karmet Stock Company has a feedstock base represented only by Kazakhstan coals, being composed of 95 percent of Karaganda coals KZh and K and 5 percent of long-flame coals of the Shubarkol open-pit.
