Without a doubt, Bob has been a primary inspiration to mein my collecting of mechanical calculating devices and un-usual and interesting calculating rules. Like others, I ini-tially thought that I was alone in this hobby, which I pur-sued when I had time, by attending antique and collectiblesshows, street fairs and by developing a small network ofdealers who showed some interest in this area. One suchdealer, Bob Soares, told me of a person who had interestssimilar to mine, and gave me Bob's name and phone numberon one fateful day in 1992.
