David Sweetman conned me into writing this article apparently with the thought I might offer some pearls on how I do my research. My first reaction was "to hell with it"; I do not want to sound like a blathering, know-it-all octogenarian. On reflection, although my articles may involve a good deal of research, much of their essence is a result of thoughtful (I hope) reflection on the topic. I try to project myself into the period about which I am writing and see what may have happened. This sort of speculation often leads to my developing a new perspective on events of the time and takes me off in a direction that I had no intention of going initially.
