This article is concerned with presenting two age-conditional welfare indices aimed at assessing the 'femaleness' of a population. Standard measures of 'femaleness', such as the female headcount ratio F and the sex-ratio S, tend to ignore variabilityin the age-wise distribution of sex-ratios, and this article undertakes a limited measurement exercise aimed at correcting this neglect. The exercise can be seen as a specific contribution to a long tradition of age-specific demographics, and more generally as a contribution to the study of development indicators.
