470 pond-reared and 237 wild-caught individually tagged females were stocked with males of the same origin in 10 maturation tanks in a commercial hatchery in Mexico. The pond-reared broodstock were the 2nd generation of captive shrimp produced fromwild spawners and had been selected for high body weight. Mature females with an attached spermatophore were transferred to individual tanks for spawning and were then returned to the maturation tank. Reproductive performance was recorded over~80 days.Wild shrimp had higher mating and spawning frequencies than pond-reared broodstock (1.8 and 1.3 matings and 1.2 and 0.8 viable spawns per female per month respectively; P<0.05). The number of nauplii per spawn was higher for wild than pond-reared shrimp(78 600 and 65 100 respectively; P<0.01), but fertilization and hatching rates were higher for pond-reared spawners. 88% of wild shrimps and 74% of pond-reared shrimps mated at least once, and 11 and 4% respectively mated more than 10 times. Spawn quality (fertilization and hatching rates, percentage of viable spawns and number of nauplii) did not decline substantially in consecutive matings.
