摘要

Primary teeth which are not shed as the permanent equivalent tooth erupts are defined as retained. The primary tooth should always be shed before or during the eruption of the permanent tooth fulfilling the "rule of dental succession". Thus, if primary and permanent teeth are visible in the mouth together, an abnormal event has occurred. Retained primary teeth are more common in small breed dogs, although they can be found in other breeds of dogs and in cats. The mode of inheritance is not understood but may be familial. The primary consequences of retained primary teeth include malocclusion, palatal trauma, and an increased risk of periodontal disease
