摘要

The words "orang utan" are derived from the Malay words "orang" meaning man and "hutan" meaning forest, thus actually meaning "people of the forest." Teeth can indeed give useful evidence of general affinities between related species. The morphology of the molar and incisor teeth of most anthropoid apes show close affinities to humans although their canine and premolar teeth do show some significant differences. Orang utans are the only great apes living outside Africa. They are divided into 2 main groups, namely Bornean orang utan (Pongo pygmaeus) and the Sumatran orang utan (Pongo abelii). The Bornean orang utan lives in the forests of Indonesia (Kalimantan) and Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak), whereas the Sumatran orang utan lives in the provinces of Aceh and Sumatra Utara in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
