摘要

This paper addresses the following questions: (1) How would you measure departure from climate-potential?; (2) How much of world vegetation is at its climate-limited potential biomass?; (3) Which consumers are most influential in preventing ecosystems from reaching their climate-potential?; and (4) How might the ecology of consumer-controlled ecosystems differ from that of resource-controlled ecosystems? It is emphasized that with fire included as a consumer, the world is 'multicoloured': 'brown' where intense mammal grazing and browsing controls vegetation; 'black' where vegetation is largely controlled by fire, or 'green' where climate, and not consumers, limit woody biomass..
