Improved seed performance of four fescue species with priming.

A series of experiments was conducted to determine an optimal seed priming treatment for Festuca rubra subsp. commutata [F. nigrescens] cv. SR5100, F. rubra subsp. rubra cv. Pennlawn, F. longifolia cv. SR3100 and F. arundinacea cv. SR8300. Priming in a solid matrix (exfoliated vermiculite No. 5) at -1.5 MPa and 20degC for 4 days resulted in superior post-priming seed germination compared with priming in polyethylene glycol or sodium nitrate, at higher water potentials, lower temperatures, or for longer durations. This priming treatment increased the germination rate at 15deg, 25deg and 35deg but most markedly at 15deg. The treatment also increased germination synchrony at 35deg and increased germination percentage under stressful conditions of high temperature and reduced water availability (35deg and -0.6 MPa).
