Frequency of Quinclorac Treatments on Bermudagrass Tolerance and Large Crabgrass Control

Field experiments were conducted over a 2-year period to evaluate rates and frequency of quinclorac (3,7-dichloro-8-qui-nolinecarboxylic acid) applications on postemergence large crab-grass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] control and on tolerance of common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] and Tifway bermudagrass [C. transvaalensis Burty-Davey x C. dactylon (L.) Pers.] cultivars. Dates of quinclorac treatment influenced large crab-grass control in 1 of 2 years. In 1991, the control was higher when 0.84 kg ha~(-1) was applied on 10 April (89%) than when delayed until 29 April (25%) or 10 June (66%). In 1992, there was no difference in large crabgrass control when 0.84 kg ha~(-1) of quinclorac was applied on 10 April (76%), 29 April (83%),or 10 June (73%). However, the control was higher in 1992 when 0.56 kg ha~(-1) was applied on 10 June, and followed by 0.56 kg ha~(-1) 30 July (96%), than when 0.84 kg ha~(-1) was applied alone, regardless of dates of application. Quinclorac applied at0.84 kg ha~(-1) on 10 April severely injured (>50%) both bermudagrass cultivars, but the turf fully recovered 4 weeks after treatment with no stand losses. Ouinclorac applied at 0.84 kg ha~(-1) on 29 April injured both bermudagrass cultivars less than when the chemical was applied at the same rate on 10 April or 10 June. Neither bermudagrass cultivar should be retreated with quinclorac during the same year. When 0.56 kg ha~(-1) followed an original treatment at 0.84 kg ha~(-1) at a 6-week interval, common bermudagrass was severely injured (>= 31 %) for 1 to 2 weeks during 1991 and 1992. Tifway bermudagrass treated with the same quinclorac treatments was severely injured (39%) during the same period in 1991 and moderately injured (23%) in 1992. Even though the turf-grass was injured moderately to severely from repeated quinclorac treatments, the turf fully recovered by 4 weeks after each treatment.
