Breeding turfgrasses that combine superior performance with conservative water use patterns is important in maintaining optimum growth potential and functional quality with less water. Morphological characteristics associated with increased canopy resistance to evapotranspiration (ET) and low leaf area are correlated with reduced ET in well irrigated turfgrass. Canopy resistance and leaf area components are also important turf forming properties. The correlation between quality and reduced ET measured under well watered, controlled environment conditions was investigated in 59 Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) selections maintained under field conditions (in USA) and optimum cultural intensities. Negative correlations were observed between turf quality rating and ET rate (measured at 25鳦 under controlled conditions). Significant correlations were detected between ET rate and quality data from 5 of the 7 USA National Turfgrass Evaluation Program locations evaluated in the study. Correlations ranged from -0.04 (at East Lansing, Michigan, USA) to -0.51 (Adelphia, New Jersey, USA). The general pattern between improved quality and reduced ET rate indicated that P. pratensis cultivars currently available combined both superior performance with conservative water use. It was unlikely that this resulted from breeding for low water use directly.
