Iron is vital for all living organisms because it is essential for metabolic processes to include oxygen transport; DNA synthesis and electron transport. Removal of iron from tissue culture media causes a prompt cessation of cellular metabolic function and cell division.In the primordial anaerobic world iron was ferrous. Primitive organisms utilize simple iron proteins such as the iron-sulfur proteins. With the development of an aerobic world iron metabolism became more complex. Most iron was oxidized to the ferric state and ferric iron is insoluble above pH 2. Organisms developed more sophisticated mechanisms that kept iron soluble at pnysiological pH and facilitated the transport of iron for vital biological functions while preventing the availability of ionic iron that could produce "free radical" damage to tissues. These functions were facilitated by transferrin and ferritin and a host of other newly discovered iron binding proteins.
