摘要

The phenology and pollination biology of Macleania rupestris, an epiphytic or terrestrial shrub common in the understorey of Neotropical cloud forests, was studied in the Talamanca mountain range of Costa Rica. The study was done to test predictions of the pollinator-limitation and fitness-trade-off hypotheses to explain limited fruit production in this species. Data collected over 12 months suggested that pollinator limitation of the hummingbirds Panterpe insignis and Colibri thalassinus is the primary cause of low fruit set in high-altitude populations of M. rupestris.
