The Wales and West Regional Meeting was held on Tuesday 15th February, and was hosted by Calumet in Bristol. Around 20 delegates attended the event, the theme of the evening being three-dimensional (3D) imaging in clinical practice. On arrival, Calumet was showcasing some of the latest equipment on offer. The first presentation of the evening was given by Doug Neil, Head of Photography at Morriston Hospital in Swansea. Doug was enthusiastic about the application and use of 3D data in clinical practice. Examples of this included masks, prosthetics, equipment design, surgical planning, visualisation and education. Facial fractures are common in contact sport, where the face is vulnerable to injury. Using a 3D surface-scanning system, 3dMD~R, an accurate record can be made of the face, and the data used to create masks for patients to support the healing process. Doug explained how a virtual facial model is then sent via e-mail, and a rapid prototype model is produced. 3D scanning techniques are more accurate, and can be produced more quickly thcln traditional impression techniques.
