摘要

Speaking Exclusively to C&CI in mid-February, Jawaid Akhtar, Chairman of the Coffee Board of India, said production in the 2012/2013 coffee year included 100,000 tonnes of Arabica and 215,00 tonnes of Robusta. This was, he explained, a very similar overall level of production to the previous year, although it had been achieved in very different circumstances to the prior year because weather patterns, and in particular the level of rainfall and the timing of that rainfall, has become increasingly difficult to predict.Unpredictable increasingly weather may be causing problems for coffee farmers but they also face other problems, not least the rising cost of inputs, particularly fertilizer, and rising labour costs. Mr Akhtar said the latter was becoming an increasinglyacute problem. "In India, labour accounts for around 60 per cent of the cost of producing Robusta and around 70 per cent of the cost of producing Arabica," he explained. "The problem is that more and more people are leaving the land to go and live in urban areas'." As he also explained, government programmes intended to create employment opportunities in rural areas by ensuring that people living in villages have at least 100 days of employment per annum are succeeding, but at the expense of coffee growers.
