Post-graduate metallurgy students from the School of Process and Materials Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand have won first and second prizes in the 1995 annual short presentation competition of the Institute of Materials. The competition, held at Wits, involves oral presentations of not more than 20 minutes, and anyone with a relevant technical subject to present can enter. The event is used as a training ground for post-graduate students, mainly in the Gauteng region, as well as research organizations such as Mintek and the CSIR. This is the first time that Wits students have won both cash prizes. Wayne Gordon took first prize with his talk on improving the weldability of ferrititc stainless steels, and Ian Horner was second with his study of the aluminium-rthenium-nickel system.
