The South African Association of Consulting Engineers (SAACE) Engineering Excellence Award in the category of 'Engineering Excellence-value greater than R5 Million' was recently awarded to Goba Consulting Engineers for their work on the Durban harbour tunnel for the eThekwini Water and Sanitation Department. The project also won the '2006 Technical Excellence' award from the South African Institute of Civil Engineers and the Concrete Society's Fulton Award for construction techniques. The R210 million Durban harbour tunnel project involved the construction of a new tunnel under the Durban harbour mouth and the installation of a variety of bulk services in the tunnel. The project was undertaken in order to replace an existing services tunnel constructed some 50 years ago. The tunnel is a first-of-its-kind 'soft ground' tunnel in South Africa. The awards by SAACE, SAICE and the Concrete Society celebrate innovation, quality, outstanding workmanship and professionalism.
