St Barbara is the patron saint of mining and tunnelling, and it was very appropriate to hold a colloquium on this special day because the Gautrain project had progressed to the point where the tunnel boring machine was being assembled and was just about to start tunnelling. The War Museum venue was ideal as it is close to the sites, and it was filled to capacity by the enthusiastic delegates. The first presentation was given by Claude Berenguier on the ITA and the use of underground space. The talk focused on the ITA theme of 'Why go underground?' dealing with the typical challenges of urban city planning and how to publicize the sustainable solutions offered by underground space. Claude discussed the ITA risk management working groups and encouraged people in South Africa to provide their expertise to working groups through the online forums at www.ita-aites.org. The next ITA conference will be in Agra, India from 22-25 September 2008.
