Twenty-five years ago, former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D., hosted a workshop on breastfeeding and human lactation that was chaired by Ruth Lawrence, M.D., currently Editor-in-Chief of Breastfeeding Medicine. This forum represented a milestone in efforts to improve maternal and child health and highlighted breastfeeding as a public health priority. Looking back at the accomplishments achieved and forward to the achievements yet to be, preeminent leaders came together to convene the first annual summit on breastfeeding, First Food: The Essential Role of Breastfeeding, in Washington, DC, in June, to continue advocating for breastfeeding as optimal for the health of the mother and child.
