IN THIS ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL OF WOMEN'S HEALTH, Schwarz and colleagues assess contraceptive counseling offered to women of reproductive age who are prescribed potentially teratogenic medications. The authors also describe the impact of an electronically generated alert on physician behavior in this clinical context. Prior research estimates that approximately 12 million potentially teratogenic medications are prescribed annually to young women in the United States and that internists, family physicians, psychiatrists, and dermatologists are responsible for the majority of these prescriptions. Given the prevalence of these medications among women of child-bearing age and the fact that half of pregnancies in the United States are unintended, contraceptive counseling in this setting should be an integral component of high quality medical practice. Moreover, since slightly more than half of unintended pregnancies occur among women not using contraception, physicians should be acutely aware of the potential for conception and should advise their patients accordingly.
