摘要

A session of this meeting was devoted to pain, from which we selected the presentation "Assessing Pain in Patients with Intellectual Disabilities" by Elinor Bouvy-Berends (Netherlands). It was selected because of its comprehensive approach encompassing (7) the general problems of pain in people with intellectual disabilities, (2) the need to identify their pain, (3) the features of the pain-cognition relationship in these populations, and (4) some guidelines that can be used in clinical approaches.(1) The general problem of pain in people with intellectual disabilities is dominated by a paradoxical situation: although self-report is the gold standard for pain evaluation, the level of cognitive impairment of patients with intellectual disabilities precludes the conventional communication of their pain to others. Together with the fact that their neurodevelopmental disorders place them at a significantly greater risk for pain-related medical conditions, they are at risk of suffering from unrecognized pain. Indeed, 60% of children and 75% of adults with a sensory or intellectual disability have chronic pain.1
