摘要

As a health visitor working with Gypsies and Travellers, I became aware of their high level of ill health and the dearth of evidence to confirm and understand this anecdotal experience. I was also aware of their alienation from the general population. This was illustrated by the hostile attitude of a local resident when he complained to the health team (GP, health visitor and administrative assistant) about provision of a mobile health clinic service to Gypsies and Travellers who were staying on waste ground near his housing estate. Although there were descriptive reports about the health of Traveller populations and their difficulty in accessing primary and secondary health care, there were no published studies using valid and reliable health status measures. In addition to the need for evidence of the health status of Gypsies and Travellers in England, I felt it was also necessary to explore their barriers to accessing primary care health service provision. Research took place in two phases.
