摘要

Caves, as ecological units, are redefined in terms of the ecologically-significant scalarphenomena that, in contrast with such traditional criteria as perpetual darkness, environmental stabilityand oligotrophy, are the special characteristics of large cavities (macrocavems) in rocks. When so defined,'caves' are ecologically distinct from the mesocaverns and all other subterranean habitats. Someimplications of this perspective for the ecological classification of animals found in subterranean habitatsare briefly discussed.
