The effects of gibberellin A4 (GA4) and 3 gibberellin biosynthesis inhibitors (uniconazole (UCZ), prohexadione-calcium (PCa) and trinexapac-ethyl (TNE)) on the growth and flowering of M. incana were investigated. In early flowering Sourei, UCZ inhibited stem elongation and flowering. Compared with controls, GA4, PCa and TNE promoted flowering at 20degree C/15degree C and 25degree C/20deg C (dayight) under 12-h photoperiods. However, only PCa and TNE induced flowering of late flowering Banrei at 20degree C/15degree C. Flowering was not induced in at 25degree C/20degree C or 30degree C/25degree C, but stem elongation of both cultivars was promoted by GA4 and PCa at all temperatures. Under greenhouse conditions in the winter, PCa promoted flowering of Banrei. Although GA4 and PCa promoted stem elongation, they did not induce flowering in the summer. It is suggested that biosynthesis and deactivation of GA4 are important factors in the control of stem elongation and flowering.
