In 1996, diseased pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) fruits imported from Korea Republic were found at the plant quarantine inspection in Kobe, Japan. The lesions were circular, sunken and dark brown, and the centre of them cracked. Acervuli containing massesof pink-colored spores and dark setae were observed on the lesions. Conidia were hyaline, aseptate, cylindrical and measured 17-25 X 4-6μm. In pathogenicity tests, the isolated fungus was pathogenic to Cucurbitaceae. The fungus isolated was identifiedas Colletotrichum orbiculare. This is thought to be the first report of C. orbiculare as a pathogen of pumpkins in Japan.
